There was a time when mainframes were computers big as commercial sized refrigerators. When external storage devices entered the scene, they had their own box; the same went for networking hardware. All of those coupled with power systems and monitoring devices looked like huge machines. Modern hardware is small, much smaller. It is now possible to install many different machines in the same rack space having computing, storage, and networking capabilities. This article is confusing at first, considering networking needs to be integrated to define HCI. It explains how HCI can modernize data center operations (almost) overnight.
